MOUNT VERNON — A predisciplinary conference between city administrators and Mount Vernon Fire Chief Shawn Christy was held Wednesday. Christy has been on paid administrative leave since June 2 as an investigation into his paramedic credentials was being conducted by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and the city of Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon Safety-Service Director Dave Glass said the meeting was between him and Christy, with legal representatives from both sides also in attendance.

“It was information sharing — sharing our perspective and the chief sharing his perspective,” said Glass.

Each paramedic is required to complete a minimum of 86 hours of continuing education within a three-year cycle and Christy’s re-certification was red-flagged by the state during an audit. The earliest the state could decide on the matter will be Aug. 17 when the next board meeting is scheduled. City officials are hoping to have the matter resolved prior to that date.

Glass said he plans to meet with his legal representative soon and hopes to have a resolution to the matter quickly.

“We’ll review what went on and, hopefully, come to some resolution in the not very distant future,” Glass said.
