MOUNT VERNON — On Thursday, a jury found Cheryl Garvin not guilty in Mount Vernon Municipal Court.

In April, Garvin was charged with misdemeanor assault when the parent of one of Garvin’s students claimed Garvin smacked her minor son during a behavior incident which allegedly occurred in August in a special needs unit in Danville. Garvin subsequently resigned her position as a teacher for the Knox County Educational Service Center and entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.

Upon hearing the not guilty verdict, Garvin’s attorney, Christopher Zuercher, said, “We believe it was the right result. She was a teacher who just found herself in a difficult situation with a very difficult child.”
