MOUNT VERNON — Kenyon College, through AVI Foodsystems, purchased nearly all of the poultry raised by 4-H and FFA members for the 2011 Knox County Junior Fair.

AVI gave a charitable donation to Interchurch Social Services in exchange for the 184 chickens and 24 turkeys which will be taken to a facility in Baltic to be processed. The poultry from the fair purchase is expected to supply enough meat for three or four meals at Kenyon during the school year.

John Marsh, sustainability director of AVI Foodsystems at Kenyon College, does all the local food purchasing for AVI. He said the poultry was offered at auction at the fair as usual. If the successful bidder decided not to keep the animal, it was given back for resale, and those are the birds AVI bought.
