MOUNT VERNON — A variety of entertainment and attractions was on hand in downtown Mount Vernon on Friday evening at the August installment of First Friday, sponsored by the Heritage Centre Association.

The downtown square was lined from one end to the other with classic and vintage cars for viewing. Also on the square were Sophia’s Petting Zoo, which featured rabbits, chickens, sheep, a goat and a llama; members of the Mount Vernon Fire Department demonstrating a fire engine and equipment to the curious youngsters; and the sale of rubber ducks for the Heritage Centre Association’s first annual rubber duck river race, which will take place Friday, Oct. 7, on the Kokosing River near The Station Break. Donations are being taken for entries with a rubber duck. Prizes will be awarded to the top winners in the race. “We need a lot more entries,” said HCA member Susan Kahrl. “But this is great tonight,” she said in referring to the good turnout downtown. “I really believe in downtown Mount Vernon.”
