MOUNT VERNON — The east end tank rehabilitation project hit a bit of a snag recently.

After draining the water tank, workers discovered some dents in the top of the tower that sits behind Knox Village Square. Mount Vernon Engineer Cameron Keaton said that they think the old vent on top of the tower froze during colder weather and a vacuum created when the water level lowered buckled part of a couple of the steel panels.

The tank was inspected two years ago and no dents were discovered then. The workers from L.C. United Painting Co., who are rehabbing and painting the large tower, now have to replace the vent with a frost-free version and also a couple of the panels.

Keaton said the project is generally on schedule, but there will be a little extra time and cost to replace the panels and vent. The project was bid at $194,000.
