MOUNT VERNON — “We all are very supportive of our veterans,” said Regent Nancy Vail when the Lucy Knox Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution made a special presentation to the Knox County Board of Commissioners on Monday morning.
Thirteen members of the local chapter attended to see the donation of a special flag designed in commemoration of Sept. 11, 2001. Vail had recently attended a session of Continental Congress and purchased this flag which was designed and copyrighted by the DAR. It was the local chapter’s decision then to donate the flag to the county commissioners. Kevin Henthorn, director of the Knox County Veterans Service Office, is providing an expandable flag pole so the flag can be displayed in a desirable location for viewing, “Because we don’t want anyone to ever forget,” said Vail.
Elements in the flag include figures of the World Trade Center towers and the U.S. Pentagon in Washington, D.C., the sites of terrorist attack planes 10 years ago; and the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, representing the plane which crashed in Pennsylvania on the same day. The bottom of the flag reads “We Remember 9/11.”
