MOUNT VERNON — Finding ways for local government offices to save money is the basic idea behind performance audits done by the Ohio State Auditor’s office.
Assistant Chief Auditor Betsy Bashore explained the program, as well as a loan program to help pay for the audits, at a meeting Thursday with the Knox County commissioners, County Auditor Jonette Curry and Prosecutor John Thatcher. The meeting was held at the request of Thatcher, who said the auditors talked about saving $20 to $25 for every dollar spent on the audit.
Bashore said an auditing team would come in, meet with the public officials and staff to identify the factors and operations the audit will look at, then they will compare offices to other offices in similar-sized counties, how the office workload is distributed, how efficiently supplies are obtained and anything else that can affect the cost of operations.
