MOUNT VERNON — A long ordeal in Kearney, Neb., has ended for the Pete Smith family as they have returned home to Ohio after spending the past five weeks at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney following an RV/truck accident on July 10.

Kenyon College Athletic Director Pete Smith told the News on Tuesday evening that his 12-year-old son, Will, was flown from Kearney to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus early Tuesday morning along with mom, Linda, and aunt, Connie. Pete, along with his brother, returned home by car later on Tuesday to Linda’s parents’ home before venturing to Children’s Hospital to see Will, whose sister Abbey, had returned home late last week.

“We’re doing really well,” said Smith, despite the circumstances and the long journey back to Ohio. Smith credited the family’s well-being with the excellent care they received while at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Assessments are to be made today by doctors on Will’s situation. Much progress has been made in the past couple weeks as Will had been in a coma following the accident.

Updates on Will’s condition as well as the rest of the family can be viewed at www.caringbridge.org/visit/willsmith12.
