MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Alternative Center, located in the former West Elementary School in Mount Vernon, is now the Knox Learning Center. An open house on Monday evening allowed students, parents and community members to learn more about the services and programs available.

“The new name,” said Knox County Educational Service Center Superintendent Timm Mackley, “more accurately reflects what we do here. The two major options for students at the Learning Center are the Positive Reinforcement Education Program and the Virtual Academy.”

The PREP Academy is supported by the Knox County Educational Service Center, the Knox County Juvenile Court and the Ohio Department of Education. Specializing in helping students who demonstrate challenging behavior, the PREP Academy provides students with individualized instruction in small group settings, and focuses on behavioral as well as academic skills. As students are given opportunities to learn and apply academic content to real-world settings, they will also develop and refine appropriate social skills.
