MOUNT VERNON — Parents of Mount Vernon High School students weren’t the only parents taking their children to school on Wednesday. Most city elementary schools reported an increase in the number of parents taking their children to school. The reason, for many, was because no definitive times were established to pick up elementary students.
Matt Cox, middle school principal, said classes there started on time. “I think we did all right today. We always have more parents bring their kids on the first day. I didn’t notice a big difference today. I think the rain may have affected that, so we had a few more. We didn’t know exactly when we were going to pick the kids up, so that may have led a few parents to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to bring them in today rather than have them wait outside for a few minutes.’”
Only one bus in the morning transports pupils to East Elementary School. Principal Eric Brown said that usually, on the first day of school, a lot of parents of elementary-aged children choose to bring their kids to school instead of sending them on the bus. That way, he said, they can drop off school supplies and meet the teachers.
“Here at East,” he said, “we had a lot of parents coming for the start of school. I think they would have even if the weather had been really nice.”
Twin Oak Principal Sue Miller said there were slightly more private vehicles than usual.
