MOUNT VERNON — Knox County deputies are still looking for leads in the burglary of a Mount Vernon police officer’s home a week ago.
Knox County Sheriff’s Office Capt. David Shaffer said the officer’s home was entered Aug. 17. Items taken included his badge, utility belt and equipment (including his duty weapon) and several imported Turkish-made shotguns.
“The shotguns are double-barreled, with distinctive engraving and inlays,” Shaffer said.
The officer, whose home is in northern Knox County, was not identified.
Capt. George Hartz of the Mount Vernon Police Department told the News the department is concerned with the possibility that someone could use the stolen badge and equipment to impersonate a police officer.
“We obviously don’t want a criminal out there using these things to impersonate an officer, but the public should be aware this is out there,” he said.
Hartz said anyone approached by an officer not in uniform should ask to see identification. If you’re still unsure, call the police department and verify the identity.
“If the officer is in a marked car it’s probably an officer, but we have had cases where someone has been able to come up with a uniform, put a flashing light on a car and pull people over,” Hartz said.
“Use caution, ask questions, and call and check if you’re unsure,” he said.
