BLADENSBURG — Some reminiscing of the past 40 years and a time to gather together with friends was the scene Saturday when the Bladensburg Fire District celebrated its 40th anniversary at East Knox Elementary School in Bladensburg.

A spaghetti supper, kids’ games and music by the band Rare Form were highlights of the day.

Representatives of MedFlight gave children the chance to see the inside of the helicopter. A demonstration also took place showing how members of the fire district use its equipment to rescue trapped motorists after an accident. All of the district’s equipment was on display including a new nine-passenger tanker.

Fire Chief Nick Cockrell welcomed those in attendance, thanking them for coming to the celebration and for their support over the past 40 years. “You can probably tell I was not here 40 years ago,” joked Cockrell. “I’ve heard a lot of stories in the past few months, talked to a lot of people and ate quite a few breakfasts at the restaurant catching up on things.” He also shared a Mount Vernon News clipping from the fire district’s mortgage note burning ceremony, saying they were debt free.
