MOUNT VERNON — A Community Development Block Grant for neighborhood improvements on the west side and bids for the next phase of the McKenzie Avenue reconstruction were the top subjects at Mayor Richard Mavis’ weekly meeting with the Mount Vernon News on Friday.

Mavis said he was notified by the city’s grant writer that the city would be getting a $265,000 Community Development Block Grant. That’s a little less than the $300,000 the grants, which are competitively awarded, have usually been for in the past. The reduction is the result of federal budget cuts.

The biggest part of the grant, $152,000, will go toward the next phase of the West Pleasant Street project. Reconstruction of the brick street from North Mulberry Street to West Sandusky Street is expected to cost nearly $400,000.
