MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County grand jury handed down indictments in its first September meeting on Tuesday.
Bradley S. Mayer, 22, Centerburg, is accused of felonious assault and kidnapping. Thatcher said on Aug. 17, Mayer allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend, put a .45-caliber gun to her head and held her in the bedroom of his apartment. The ex-girlfriend was allegedly able to leave when Mayer’s roommate came into his bedroom. Detective David Light, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the case.
According to the indictment, Albert H. Bull Jr., 50, Martinsburg, faces his second felony drunk driving charge, having been previously convicted in Lawrence County in 2000. Thatcher said the night of Aug. 19, Trooper Paul Shore, Ohio State Highway Patrol, was dispatched to a one-vehicle, non-injury accident where he found Bull in the driver’s seat. Bull allegedly failed field sobriety tests, then refused to take a chemical test to detect whether he was intoxicated. Bull also faces a felony refusing OVI test charge.
Michael E. Barbosa, 22, Mount Vernon, is charged with failing to obey the order or signal of a police officer for allegedly fleeing from Cpl. Beth Marti, MVPD, the night of Aug. 8. Thatcher said after Marti confirmed Barbosa was driving with an expired registration she activated her siren and lights. Barbosa allegedly sped away on his motorcycle reaching speeds of 80 to 90 miles per hour, but Marti eventually caught Barbosa at his residence.
Several area men face theft, breaking and entering and burglary charges, in unrelated cases.
On June 10, Brian L. Murphy, 34, Howard, was allegedly found in possession of a 1998 Harley-Davidson motorcycle stolen from a Mount Vernon residence last November. Murphy is charged with possession of stolen property.
Joseph A. Menke, 45, allegedly broke into a South Main Street business and a senior center in Mount Vernon, the night of July 26. Thatcher said Menke allegedly used a pry bar to break into the senior center. Menke faces a possession of criminal tools charge in addition to breaking and entering charges.
Jason W. Moran, 27, Mount Vernon, allegedly broke into a West Gambier Street business the night of Aug. 12.
Adam T. Canter, 19, and James D. Keihl, 20, both of Mount Vernon, allegedly used a steel auger and a hammer during a break-in at an unoccupied house on Wooster Road on Aug. 31. Both face breaking and entering and possession of criminal tools charges.
On Sept. 4, Andrew C. Rettig, 34, Mount Vernon, allegedly broke into a residence on Stutz Avenue. Rettig faces a burglary charge.
Detective Feeney investigated the Murphy, Menke and Moran cases. Deputy Scott Baker, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the Canter, Keihl and Rettig cases.
According to the indictment, Daniel J. Morgan, 30, Martinsburg, faces his third felony domestic violence charge as the result of a domestic disturbance with his live-in girlfriend the night of Aug. 16. Lorain County Court of Common Pleas records show Morgan was convicted of felony domestic violence in 2004 and 2006. Thatcher said Morgan also faces intimidation charges for allegedly threatening his girlfriend and two other witnesses with physical harm if they reported the incident to the sheriff’s office. Deputy Charles Statler investigated the case.
Arraignments are scheduled for Sept. 16 at 9 a.m., before Common Pleas Court Judge Otho Eyster.
