MOUNT VERNON — The county is contemplating changing the system it uses to assign house numbers. The change will not be a major one but will involve how numbers are assigned.

“We are thinking about using one of two systems,” said Justin Smith, a geographic information system technician with the Knox County Map Department. “One uses software in conjunction with the county’s ariel maps to automatically suggest and assign house numbers. The other system requires that we go out with a handheld GPS meter and manually assign house numbers on site.”

The former system had the Emergency Management Agency based on the county aeriel maps that were marked off in grids. Smith said under the former system the EMA would assign the numbers and call the map department to let it know.

“The new system will let the map department do the assigning and should be a more efficient system than before,” Smith explained. “The software is available for doing this and now is a good time to make the change because of that.”

Smith did not expect there would be much change regarding existing house numbers.
