MOUNT VERNON — The city has received a bit of good news, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis reported Friday. The Ohio Department of Transportation notified the city that its application for a grant to help pay for the refurbishing of the old railroad trestle over the Kokosing River just east of the Ohio 13 viaduct and the smaller trestle over Dry Run has been approved.
Mavis said the grant, for a maximum of $596,000, will pay 80 percent of the cost and will be available in 2014. The money is from ODOT’s Transportation Enhancement Fund.
This will be the third step in the city’s Kokosing River Parkway Plan. The first will be the restoration and placement of the bowstring truss bridge at Foundation Park, the second will be the construction of a pedestrian bridge from Foundation Park to the dike on the north side of the river.
Money for the bowstring truss bridge is to be available in 2012 and the pedestrian bridge in 2013.
