MOUNT VERNON — Paul Higgins met briefly with the Knox County Commissioners to discuss the senior citizens levy renewal which will be on the primary election ballot in 2012.
Higgins said the Knox County Task Force for Older Adults, of which he is a member, wants to get the awareness of the need for the levy up, and is looking at beginning efforts to promote the levy as soon as the 2011 election in November is over.
The levy is for 0.79 mills and will raise approximately $841,000 in 2012. If it is renewed in the spring, collections will continue uninterrupted in 2013.
Higgins reminded the commissioners that the last time the levy was renewed, it passed by only 300 votes and since 2012 is a presidential election year, more people are likely to get out and vote.
He said there is still some uncertainty about whether the primary will be in March or May. In recent years, the primary has been in March when there is a presidential election.
