MOUNT VERNON — On a balmy, sunny Tuesday afternoon, 100 volunteers spread out across Knox County for Community Care Day, kicking off the 2011 United Way Campaign.
At a lunch buffet at Riverside Park before heading for their respective projects, Jen Odenweller, executive director of United Way of Knox County, told the volunteers that “by working together to tackle community issues we all make a difference. We live united.”
Campaign Chairman Steve Hall, president of Modern Builders Inc., developed that theme when he told the crowd, “United Way’s work is all about ‘advancing the common good’ right here in Knox County. When we focus our efforts in education, income and health, we develop the building blocks for a good life for all of us.”
As the company of volunteers, all wearing gray “LIVE UNITED” T-shirts, prepared to deploy, Hall gave them a bit of encouraging news. The early Pacesetter Campaign has given the overall campaign a great start, by raising $175,000, which amounts to 25 percent of the campaign’s $700,000 goal.
