MOUNT VERNON — A Frazeysburg man remains in the Knox County Jail after allegedly shooting at an Ohio Department of Wildlife Officer.
Robert Kirkland, Frazeysburg, is currently charged in Mount Vernon Municipal Court with one count of felonious assault according to Knox County Prosecutor John Thatcher. A $25,000 bond was set Tuesday. There is no 10 percent provision allowed for the bond.
“Kirkland attempted to cause physical harm with a deadly weapon to a wildlife officer,” Thatcher said. “Additional charges may be filed against Kirkland. Otherwise the case is currently under investigation.”
The wildlife officer was allegedly shot at while investigating a spotlighting deer violation on Sunday. The officer reported the incident to the Knox County Sheriff’s office.
Thatcher said a game warden is considered a peace officer and has the authority to carry a weapon and to make arrests. A wildlife officer has the authority under the Ohio Revised Code to enter on to private property to investigate matters of violations of Ohio wildlife laws.
