The beginning of September 1861 brought some sad news to Knox County: Col. Lorin Andrews was seriously ill. The Democratic Banner ran the following item:

“We are sorry to hear of the severe illness of Col. Lorin Andrews, which has compelled him to temporarily leave the army, to seek repose in his quiet home in Gambier. His disease is what is called ‘camp fever’ accompanied by rheumatism. It is to be hoped that his illness will be of short duration. He is a true and patriotic man, whose service cannot well be dispensed with in the present fearful crisis.”

Volunteers to be paid

For several reasons, Civil War troops had a horrible time getting paid regularly. This little item had to be welcome, if it happened as scheduled: “We learn that the three-month volunteers will soon be paid off at Columbus. This will be good news for the volunteers and everybody else.”

New company

The month also brought news of a new company being recruited:

“Lieut. Rogers is now engaged in raising a new company of volunteers in this county, and we learn is meeting with great success. Lieut. R is a young gentleman of some experience in military matters, having been in the three months’ service, under the first Proclamation of the President. It is proposed to hold a series of meetings throughout the county, to further this movement. The company has been assigned to the regiment commanded by Col. Whittlesey, a West Point graduate. It will be composed entirely of young men. The Headquarters are No. 5 Kremlin Building. Squad drill between the hours of 6 and 9 p.m.”
