MOUNT VERNON — The Memorial Building needs some exterior maintenance work and the Knox County Commissioners will likely hire Historical Design Group of Worthington to oversee the project.
County Building Superintendent John Alberts said deterioration is visible around the exterior overhang of the building, so he asked the design firm to look at the situation “to see what we’re getting into.”
William Kunkle from the Worthington firm told the commissioners the company has worked on the Memorial Building before, so he is familiar with it.
“The wood cornice in the front of the building is not bad, but the back is a different problem,” he said.
The project proposal he submitted to the county includes several pictures of places where leaks have apparently caused paint to peel and have exposed deteriorating wood that needs attention. Other spots are noted to be peeling and in need of painting. Kunkle said that in one area, it appears that during heavy rain, water is sloshing over the edge of the gutter.
