MOUNT VERNON — McKenzie Street between Sugar and Hamtramck streets will be closed for a reconstruction project scheduled to start the second week of October.

Traffic was a big discussion point at the preconstruction meeting with Canyon Construction, City Engineer Cameron Keaton said, and “since most residents have access off alleys and side streets, we decided to close it during construction.”

The project is expected to be completed in December before Christmas.

Canyon is being paid $268,902 to rebuild the section of brick streets, which involves taking up the bricks, replacing the water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer lines and rebuilding the curbs and sidewalks, then replacing the bricks.

A few trees will have to be removed and that will be the first work to begin.

Keaton said all residents will be notified about the plans and if anyone has any questions, they should contact his office.
