MOUNT VERNON — Knox County has a brand new township — Gann Township — which encompasses the same boundaries as the village of Brinkhaven/Gann.

After considering a petition by the village of Gann to create a new township, the Knox County Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on Thursday to take action on the matter.

The village of Gann has paid taxes to Union Township, the petition states, but has derived no benefit from those taxes. Gann Village Solicitor Noel Alden told the commissioners the purpose of the petition was to find a way for Gann authorities to keep the funds currently going to Union Township and use them to benefit the citizens of Gann.

Gary Worster, Gann’s mayor, said the money diverted from Union Township to Gann Township will be used for things like ice and snow removal and street repair within the boundaries of the village.

No Union Township officials were present at the meeting to protest the action and the commissioners granted the village’s request.

Alden said there will be no increase in taxes as a result of the action because the residents of Gann currently pay township property taxes to Union Township. Those tax revenues, approximately $1,300 to $1,500, will now stay in Gann Township.
