MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon High School students held a traditional “See You at the Pole” event this morning. According to MVHS principal Kathy Kasler, the event was requested and organized by students through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
The annual event, which is held on the fourth Wednesday of September, is a global day of student prayer. More than 3 million students in 60 countries were expected to participate.
“I think this was their standard day to do the ‘See You at the Pole,’” Kasler said. “They met at 6:45 (this morning) and wrapped it up about 7:15. It was before the school day started and was student initiated. It’s not a school club or event. It is something that is done by an outside group that has requested use of our building.”
Kasler indicated FCA does have to make a formal request to do this and aside from it being the traditional “See You at the Pole” event, it was not a regularly scheduled event. Any community group may make a request to use school property for an event as long as it does not interfere with the school day or other official school events.
Board policy is that the Board of Education believes that the grounds and facilities of this district should be made available for community purposes, provided that such use does not infringe on the original and necessary purpose of the property or interfere with the educational program of the schools and is harmonious with the purposes of this district.
