MOUNT VERNON — Almost three hours of questions directed at the candidates for mayor and city council Thursday evening did not reveal many major differences between the candidates.

Less than 100 people, including the candidates, attended the forum sponsored by the Knox County 912 Project at a small auditorium in Mount Vernon Nazarene College’s Thorne Hall. All the city candidates in contested races, except Democratic council at-large incumbent Rebecca Jordan, attended the session.

The most significant point of contention seemed to be the handling of the case involving former Fire Chief Sean Christy.

Mayor Richard Mavis was asked why Christy as not fired as soon as the transgressions came to light, while Republican challenger Jay Maners was asked later how he would have handled the case.
