MOUNT VERNON — The 15th annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was held Saturday morning at The Dan Emmett Conference Center. The event, said its organizer, Paul Dove, DDS, is designed to “recognize, honor and pray for our leaders.”
“This is our 15th year,” Dove explained. “It all got started one time when Mayor Mavis and I were together at a breakfast in Mansfield. And I thought this would be good and I just felt the prompting of the Lord and we are prompted in Scripture in First Timothy, Chapter 2 where Paul says that we should always exhort to have prayer and supplications for men in authority. So I believe when we pray for our city and pray for our officials we are going to see results. So that’s the basis for the breakfast.”
The breakfast began with the presentation of colors by the Knox County Career Center JROTC Color Guard commanded by Col. Chris Salvucci and John Francis leading the Pledge of Allegiance. The invocation was given by Pastor Bill Fennell of Mount Vernon Baptist Temple.
Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis welcomed attendees and introduced elected officials and candidates in the audience.
Special testimony was given by Tim Hughes, retired high school teacher and principal.
