MOUNT VERNON — Recognizing that October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, New Directions: The Domestic Abuse Shelter of Knox County and the Knox County DELTA Project called the community together Tuesday for a candlelight vigil on Public Square.

The purpose of the annual vigil is to call attention to the problem of domestic violence, to let people know it is a serious problem and, said DELTA intern Amy Reeves, “to give a voice to those who don’t have a voice.”

One of the women at the vigil said she was there as a survivor of sexual abuse by her biological father. She said it is important for people to remember the victims of all kinds of violence and to support those victims and help them heal.
