MOUNT VERNON — Tyra Brown, the daughter of JoAnn Clark, is a semifinalist in the 2012 National Achievement Program.

The Mount Vernon High School senior was stunned when she learned about being named a semifinalist.

“I was real excited,” she said. “I was really happy. It was not expected. I had completely forgotten I had checked that box on the PSAT.”

This scholastically talented young woman will now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth more than $2.4 million to be offered next spring.

“Just being a semifinalist puts me on a national level of admissions. It’s very good for me,” said Brown.
