MOUNT VERNON — The final First Friday of the year couldn’t have had more perfect weather.

Downtown manager for the Heritage Centre Association Lynne Ricard was ecstatic over the weather. “This is fantastic. We’ve been lucky all year and we’ve had record crowds.”

The numbers of people downtown grew steadily as the evening progressed, a good crowd walking down to the Kokosing River at 7 p.m. for the rubber duck races.

The event was a fundraiser for the Heritage Center Association. People “bought” one of he little yellow ducks that are popular bath toys. Then they were all dumped in the Kokosing upstream from the Viaduct. The first one to cross the finish line, where “Mother Goose” was waiting, won the choice of the lease of a 2012 Ford Focus for a year or $3,000 cash from Donley Ford.

The winner was Gloria Lassiter. More than 500 ducks were purchased.

Sue Hillier’s duck came in second and won her a 42-inch plasma TV, Ron Griggs won a $500 downtown shopping spree for having the third-place duck and Suzanne Metcalf won a 2012 season pass to the Hiawatha Water Park for fourth place.
