MOUNT VERNON — State Rep. Margaret Ann Ruhl was a special guest at Monday’s meeting of the Mount Vernon school board. She presented an official Ohio House of Representative commendation to Wiggin Street Elementary for reaching an “Excellent with Distinction” designation on the latest state report card. Ruhl also issued commendations for excellent ratings to East Elementary, Twin Oak Elementary and Mount Vernon High School.

Pleasant Street Elementary was the featured school at the meeting, and teachers reported on their shift in focus from achievement [test results] to progress and gains in student learning. The gains focus complements achievement data, and helps teachers, students and parents take a more active role in student academic growth. Also, parent volunteer Chrissy Connell received the Pleasant Street Behind the Scenes Award for her “willingness to do anything” to help out in the classrooms.
