LIBERTY TOWNSHIP — Liberty Township has five cemeteries it is responsible for maintaining. To pay for that expense, it has a 0.6-mill levy. The levy is up for a five-year renewal at the November election.
The levy costs the owner of a $100,000 house $21 per year. Trustee Patti Frazee said the levy brings in about $10,000 per year.
“We try to maintain the cemeteries to the level the residents want,” said Trustee Don Rine, who handles most of the cemetery management for the township. Mowing, fence cleaning, brush clearing and keeping the roads graveled all take time and money.
“We try to keep expenses down,” Frazee said.
One of the biggest items is the mower, which Rine said is on a schedule for replacement every three years.
