MOUNT VERNON — A number of recent burglaries within the city of Mount Vernon have residents and police officers on the lookout for continued incidents.

Mount Vernon Police Department Capt. George Hartz reported that a total of 18 burglaries were reported in Mount Vernon between Sept. 3 and Oct. 8. Of these, eight were reported in the east end of town with six occurring in the north to downtown areas.

While Hartz stated that this is not an overwhelmingly large number of burglaries, it is enough to be a reason of concern. Police officers are reportedly keeping a watch out for any suspicious activity around the city.

No suspects have been identified.

Hartz recommended that residents make sure they lock the doors and windows of their homes and garages and not leave items of value laying around on their property. Keeping lights on during the dark hours of the evening is another way to deter burglaries, he said.
