MOUNT VERNON — Senior citizens who attended the SALT program Thursday at The Station Break Senior Center left armed with information that could save them thousands of dollars.

Manilath James, consumer protection educator for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, described some of the most common scams and fraudulent practices victimizing senior citizens and gave tips on how to recognize and avoid them.

Some of the common signs of a scam, she said, are:

•You’re asked to send money via wire transfer.

•You win a contest you never entered.

•You’re pressured to “act now.”

•You must pay a fee to receive a prize.

•Personal information is requested.

•A large down payment is requested.

•A company refuses to give written information, such has written verification of debts.
