BRINKHAVEN — Opposition to the proposed closing of the Brinkhaven Post Office was heard Thursday evening when village residents came out to the Brinkhaven Church of Christ for an informational public meeting.
Conducting the meeting while sharing information on the Postal Service’s plans plus options village residents are faced with was Christy Giardino, postmaster at Rockbridge. Attending with Giardino was Jim Hammar, retail specialist for the Cincinnati District of the United States Postal Service.
“It’s not ‘closing no matter what.’ We have not determined we’re closing,” said Giardino, assuring residents that the proposed closing is not a done deal yet. She explained how the USPS recently conducted a study for discontinuance in an effort to propose options of reversing the trend of the government agency continuing to lose money. “The post office is broke,” said Giardino. “We want to capture the revenue back.”
A total of 10,000 small post offices were placed on a list to be studied earlier this year with the Brinkhaven Post Office the only office in the area included on that list. Ninety post offices in Ohio are included on that list.
