MOUNT VERNON — The Knox County Board of Health is considering a system of posting results of restaurant inspections at the doors or front counters of the establishment as a means of informing its customers of their performance.

Speaking as a concerned citizen at the board of health monthly meeting Wednesday, Wayne Clayborne told of a system used by health departments elsewhere, particularly in other states, where colored stickers are posted at restaurants where a grade is given based on their recent inspection results. He told of instances were grades of A, B or C were posted, and others where colored stickers were posted representing a particular grade.

“I think this would make them look good when a customer comes up and they see the stickers. I think this is way past due,” said Clayborne. He has brought up this idea to as many as 39 restaurants around Knox County.

“None of them had any objections. They would all like to see something like this,” he said. “If you do a good job, you need to pat them on the back for it. And if it catches on, employees can take pride in their work.”
