GAMBIER — A new center for the visual arts opens to the Knox County community on Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Gund Gallery on the Kenyon College campus.
The center is a showcase for modern and contemporary art. Its entrance is graced by “The Mountain” a sculpture by French artist Aristide Maillol, on loan from the collection of Graham and Ann Gund, and the public at large is invited to savor the variety of visual and auditory experiences of the inaugural exhibitions housed inside the building.
The artworks on display in the Buchwald-Wright Gallery space are an intriguing blend of work by artists working in traditional media and those working in new media. For example, the feature exhibition, called “Seeing/Knowing,” celebrates the digital age. It explores the merging of information and images, the conversion of data into a visual form. Visitors will encounter static pieces of art and digital projections, and framed prints and carved sculptures that arose from those projections. They will see generative art, ever-changing images that can be altered according to the input, and artwork produced through a relatively new approach to imaging — Maker-bot sculptures. Those are plastic 3-D prints of two-dimensional data.
