MOUNT VERNON — Assistant Fire Chief Chris Menapace will be sworn in as the new Mount Vernon fire chief at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, Mayor Richard Mavis reported.

Mavis said the ceremony will be held at the fire station instead of City Hall because the firefighters want to be in attendance.

With the brick street reconstruction under way on McKenzie Street, Mavis said City Engineer Cameron Keaton ran across an interesting piece of information recently, as the result of a comment made by a resident of the area. It seems that in 1961, City Council passed an ordinance designating Elliott Street, between Sugar Street and Hamtramck Street, as one-way south and Third Avenue as one-way north.

Elliott is currently one-way north, as are Gay Street and Third Avenue, and so far, no record has been found of council changing that 1961 measure.

Mavis said they will continue to look into the issue and no changes will be considered or made without talking to the residents of the street.
