  • David Butcher of Utica gets a shot in the arm from Julie Miller, Knox County Board of Health commissioner, during Saturday’s drive-thru flu vaccination clinic. Although he only had to wait about 15 minutes for he and his parents, Alice and Bruce Butcher, to be vaccinated, he said he needed to stretch his legs and stood for his shot. About 400 shots were administered on Saturday. Additional clinics will be offered by the health department over the next several weeks.

  • This 106 pound watermelon was grown by Richard Small of Possum Street, south of Mount Vernon. It was planted by seed on May 24 and harvested on Sept. 26. It was on display at the Utica Homecoming. He had several other large watermelons ranging from 50 to 65 pounds.
  • The students at Dan Emmett School are called Pint Sized Heroes for recruiting their parents and family friends as blood donors. The American Red Cross Knox County Chapter blood drive at the school is held twice a year and Monday they had 60 donors. Kindergartner, Vivian Noble, 5, recruited her mom, Amanda Noble, for the drive. The Red Cross has an assembly at the school explaining the blood drive. Then each student who recruits a parent is present a gift.
  • State Rep. Margaret Ann Ruhl presents official House commendations to Lynn Riggenbach, principal of Wiggin Street Elementary, to honor the school’s achievement in earning an “Excellent with Distinction” designation on the 2010-11 school report card.

  • Because leaves are great fertilizer, Terry Piatt is mulching this early layer of leaves along Highland Drive. Piatt took advantage of the warm weather we have been experiencing to get a start on his fall yard work. He said when the leaves are all down he will blow them into piles.

  • When leaving the Mount Vernon Industrial Park on Wednesday morning, a truck driver’s GPS told him to make a right turn onto Glen Road to get to Martinsburg Road. After starting the turn, he realized the power pole, at far left, was in the way, so he drove onto this lawn at 1250 Newark Road. The Ohio State Highway Patrol charged Trung Q. Dinh, 30, Morrow, Ga., with failure to control.
  • The new connector road entrance off Coshocton Road was opened Wednesday. Pavement and curbs have been installed from Coshocton Road to just south of the Knox Community Hospital entrance. The Yauger Road entrance to KCH will close Monday and remain closed until construction is complete. All KCH traffic will use the Coshocton Road entrance.
  • Mount Vernon’s Jordan Crabtree (23) finds some running room against Delaware Hayes earlier this season. Crabtree and the Yellow Jackets will be looking for a Homecomig win when they host Watkins Memorial on Friday.

  • The loose leaf drop-off area at the street garage, 1 Cougar Drive, is open to accept leaves Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drop-off area is for loose leaves only. All bags or other containers must be removed from the area after they are emptied. Those wishing to dispose of leaves on Saturdays should use the Knox County Landfill site on Thayer Road, off U.S. 36, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Leaf pickup within the city of Mount Vernon will tentatively begin Monday, Oct. 31.   • Donald Crunkilton of Mount Vernon found this sweet potato shaped like a duck among his recent crop. Crunkilton has never grown sweet potatoes before although he is a retired, life-long farmer. He does his gardening at the community garden at the First Church of the Nazarene on Coshocton Avenue. He doesn’t plan to eat the potato because he says he has plenty of them. “I’ll just keep it until it falls apart,” he said.

  • Bob Giehl has a large variety of dahlias in a plot behind his home at 954 Beech St. Giehl grew up in Mount Vernon always growing plants. His career as an electro-mechanical engineer took him to California where he became a master gardener. Now retired, he has a garden and raises these dahlias. He explains there are many different flowers on the dahlia plants, with as many as 50 in his plot. “This has been an amazing growing year,” he said of the variety of dahlia blooms.

  • A tribute concert to singer/songwriter John Denver played to a full house at the Memorial Theater, Saturday night. Singer Jim Curry, with his five-piece band, sang the full range of Denver’s hit songs. Curry’s looks and voice are much like Denver and he captured the essence of the late singer’s music.
  • With a goal of keeping pets warm, dry and out of the wind, the Knox County Humane Society is giving straw bedding and animal houses to pet owners. The society purchased 45 bales of straw that were divided into thirds and placed in plastic bags for distribution. They also have information on cats and a warmth disc for pets.   • The contractors are in the preliminary stages of rebuilding North McKenzie Street between East Sugar and East Hamtramck streets. The pipe is for new sewer and water lines. The work is expected to be completed this year.
  • A Community Development Block Grant has made it possible to refurbish North Mulberry Street between Burgess and Pleasant streets. Mount Vernon City Engineer Cameron Keaton said new curbs, gutters and sidewalks are being built. Small’s Asphalt has the contract for $53,283. Keaton said the grant was for $64,885, so addition sidewalks will be replaced with the extra money.
  • Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps veteran Francis Constantikes of Mount Vernon carried a picture of her late husband with her during her visit to the World War II Memorial Saturday and had her picture taken at the spot where the action at the bridge at Remagen is commemorated. That was one of the places Theodore Constantikes was at during his service with the 42nd Infantry Division.
  • Pearl Frye, left, a World War II veteran living in Knox County, participated in the Honor Flight, Saturday, to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.   • I-beams that will brace the north wall of the Buchwald Center are being welded to brackets bolted into the wall. The wall was against the old Kresge building that burned last fall and needed to be stabilized. The beams will go 8 feet undergound and be covered with cement to keep the brick wall secure. Panels with a white brick pattern will go over the beams to match the rest of the building.
