MOUNT VERNON — A guest at the Gary and Pam Blackford home at 113 S. Catherine St. didn’t ring the doorbell. A deer ran up the front steps Thursday, jumping through the lower glass of the storm door. The door was locked and the interior door was open, though no one was home.
Then the deer went into the dining room and saw a way out. It was a large south window. But there was a minor obstacle. There was a small table with a planter on top.
No problem for the deer. It jumped for the window kicking the planter over backward where it smashed on the floor scattering dirt around the room.
It did leave a small calling card. At the bottom of one leg on the dining room table was a small tuft of hair. Then the deer had a surprise. The window is a good 8 feet above the ground.
Smashing through the glass the deer took the window frame with it. A neighbor, home for lunch, just by coincidence, saw the deer jump a privacy fence and disappear among the homes in the middle of the block.
Animal Control Officer Jim St. Clair looked for blood but none was apparent. The Blackfords’ several cats appeared to have been frightened and hid about the house but were finally located.
