MOUNT VERNON — Incumbent Mayor Richard Mavis will hold on to his office for another four years after defeating challenger Jay Maners in Tuesday’s election.

From the release of absentee votes at 7:40 p.m., Mavis held a good lead and never relinquished that lead as new results were posted throughout the evening.

Mavis, elected to his fifth term as mayor, was gratified with the comfortable margin of victory, but complimented Jay Maners with running an aggressive campaign.

“Jay had a great sign campaign and I think it awakened a lot of people. ... The signs created interest and people realized we had to be more aggressive and not just rest on the accomplishments of the past 16 years.”
