MOUNT VERNON — Gasps of surprise and tears of joy mingled with applause and cheers Saturday evening when the winners of the 2012 Distinguished Young Women of Knox County Scholarship Program were announced.

Lauren Butterfield, a senior at Mount Vernon High School, is the 2012 Distinguished Young Woman of Central Knox County. She was also the winner of the talent portion of the Central Knox County division.

“I’m feeling ecstatic and overjoyed and I don’t really know what to say,” she said. “It was a wonderful time and I am so glad that I did it. This experience of being in Distinguished Young Women was so much fun. I met so many wonderful ladies and we bonded so well. I had a great time. It is something that I will always remember.”

Lauren’s father Charles Butterfield said he was pleasantly surprised when Lauren won.

“It’s quite an honor,” he said. “All the young ladies were so talented. I don’t know what to say. It’s just a great group of young ladies.”

Norma Butterfield, Lauren’s mother, said she was equally surprised.
