On Oct. 29, 1861, the Mount Vernon Democratic Banner reported that another company of recruits had left the county:
MOUNT GILEAD — Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper C. Todd Carpenter has been chosen Trooper of the Year at Mount Gilead Post 59. Fellow officers at the post chose Carpenter for his leadership abilities, professional ethics, courteous treatment of others, work attitude and cooperation with supervisors, peers, and the public.
