MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon High School’s Food for the Hungry drive, held Nov. 14 through 18, brought in more than $2,527.53 and 792 food and hygiene items. The combination of money and cans is the equivalent to nearly 11,000 cans of food.
Students in the Transitions, Relationships & Career Search I class collected donations from each first period class the week before Thanksgiving. Family, Career and Community Leaders of America sponsored the school drive, awarding the top class a breakfast. Peter Lyons’ business class won the contest by donating the equivalent of over 2,000 food items.
Students and staff members throughout the school were aware of the extreme need for families in the Mount Vernon Area.
“Although FCCLA offered a reward to the winning class, student awareness of the community’s need, and a desire to make a difference, made this food drive a success,” said FCCLA advisor Martha Melick.
The MVHS donations were given to Joy Harris, director of Interchurch Social Services, on Tuesday.
The Food for the Hungry campaign concludes on Dec. 10, at Mount Vernon City Hall with a day-long collection and live broadcast.
