MOUNT VERNON — Midwest Innovations is hoping a rezoning request made to the city of Mount Vernon will be approved so that it can move its current facility from the Harcourt Road area to Taylor Road on the city’s north side.
“It’s a real nice property in a good area,” said Tom Rickels, CEO of Midwest Innovations, during a public hearing Monday night at City Hall.
Rickels said the day rehabilitation service currently utilizes a 2,500-square-foot facility that does not have handicap-accessible restrooms. Moving to the site of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Kingdom Hall will not only add 2,000 square feet of work space but it will be ADA compliant and allow employment of individuals requiring the use of a wheelchair.
Rickels explained that Midwest Innovations provides job opportunities for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities at minimum wage. Similar facilities provide payment at piece rates.
