MOUNT VERNON — A jail contract, a water meter-reading system and a city wastewater contract were the topics of discussion when Mount Vernon City Council and the Knox County Commissioners conducted their annual combined meeting Monday evening at the Knox County Service Center.
Knox County Board of Commissioners President Teresa Bemiller opened the meeting, welcoming the Mount Vernon City Council members and other city officials.
First on the agenda was the city’s annual contract with the Knox County Jail, where city offenders are housed. “This is a charge for those who are arrested under city ordinance,” said Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Mavis, who shared a schedule of jail fees over the last number of years which was reviewed in accordance with percentage increases each year in determining the next year’s fee.
The request for this year is at $311,916.18, which reflects a 2.5 percent increase over 201
