MOUNT VERNON — Reaction to a change in traffic flow on Marion Street in the city’s north end has been generally positive since a 90-day trial period began Oct. 1.
Previously, Marion Street traffic ran only north from its convergence with West Pleasant and Norton streets. One-way north traffic was maintained for two blocks to Monroe Street, and there was two-way traffic on Marion north of Monroe.
During the test period, which continues until the end of the year, traffic now flows both north and south for the entire length of Marion Street. New signs erected by the city clearly mark the new traffic pattern.
“Initially, we heard some concerns about parking,” said Mount Vernon Service-Safety Director Dave Glass, “but it seems to be working fine. The street is not very wide, but it doesn’t carry a lot of traffic. This gives residents more flexibility and I think it will be a real good move.”
Approval of City Council is required to make the change permanent. Public comment is welcomed by the Service-Safety Department at 393-9520.
Mike Morris, owner of Mike’s Custom Garage, is largely responsible for the change. He appeared before City Council in August to recommend the change in traffic routing and believes it is now easier for residents and his suppliers to negotiate and park on Marion Street.
