MOUNT VERNON — The 2012 primary election is set for Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Area voters will have the chance to vote absentee or be registered to vote by Feb. 6, 2012.
“It’s a nominating process,” said Knox County Board of Elections Director Kim Horn, of the primary election, also known as a partisan election. Voters have the opportunity to change their party affiliation only at the primary election. When voters arrive at the polls to vote, they are asked on which party ballot they choose to be voting. If they are requesting a party change, they are given a Challenge Form which is to be filled out before they vote. These forms can also be requested and returned with an absentee ballot.
Once a party affiliation has been changed, that becomes the voter’s party of designation for the next two years. Horn said that there are no restrictions as to how many times voters can change their affiliation.
