MOUNT VERNON — Shelley Coon has announced her candidacy to run for the office of Knox County Treasurer. She has filed her petition with the Board of Elections for the March 2012 Primary.

Coon has worked in the treasurer’s office for the last 11 years and previously worked in the Knox County Auditor’s Office.

“Working in the treasurer’s office for the past 11 years has given me the opportunity to become familiar with all aspects of the day-to-day operations of the office and enables me to perform the required duties of the treasurer, beginning day one,” Coon said. “Along with my previous years working in the auditor’s office, I have a strong background in county government, as well as the long-term planning necessary to run an organized and efficient office.”

Coon is an active member of Soroptimist International of Mount Vernon and Knox County as recording secretary and co-chairs the annual Soroptimist style show. She serves on the board for Knox Housing Services Inc. and has been a judge for Distinguished Young Women of Ohio at-large program. She is a member of the Knox County Republican Women’s Club and was recently endorsed by the Knox County Republican Central Committee to run for Knox County Treasurer.

Coon is a member and attends Gay Street United Methodist Church.

“Taxpayers who call or visit the office will always be treated with dignity and respect, which they deserve,” stated Coon.

Coon, a lifelong resident of Knox County, resides in Mount Vernon. She has one son, Nick, who is a teacher at the Mount Vernon Middle School.

The Knox County Board of Elections has until Dec. 19 to certify petitions. Only candidates with enough signatures (50) will appear on the primary ballot.
