MOUNT VERNON — On Friday, Dec. 16, Knox County Common Pleas Court Judge Otho Eyster handed down sentences in six felony cases, according to Prosecutor John Thatcher.
John A. Brookins, 19, Mount Vernon, was convicted on a charge of rape for engaging in sexual conduct with a 12-year-old female on March 20. Brookins was sentenced to a prison term of 10 years to life. Thatcher said Brookins was also classified as a Tier III sex offender who must register his address with authorities for his lifetime. Detective Tom Bumpus, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, investigated the case.
Holly R. Frost, 25, Mount Vernon, was convicted of passing bad checks, forgery and theft for passing 17 bad checks at two Mount Vernon financial institutions between May 23 and July 11. Thatcher said the checks totaling $12,303.83 were written on closed checking accounts. Frost was convicted of a bad check charge in a separate case for passing a worthless $850 check at a local bank on Aug. 22. Frost committed the offenses in both case with several co-defendants, according to Thatcher. Frost was sentenced to 15 months in prison and ordered to pay restitution to the victims. Detective Cpl. Rick Owen Black, 21, Mount Vernon, was convicted of burglary and receiving stolen property for breaking into a Madison Street home at about 3 a.m. on July 7. Black was later found in possession of an air compressor and tools stolen from the residence. Black was sentenced to a three-year term of community control supervision, including a 30-day jail sentence. Thatcher said Black will serve a 17-month prison term if he violates his supervision. Patrol Officer Jessica Butler, MVPD, investigated the case.
Patrick D. Yoder, 22, Gambier, was convicted of breaking and entering and theft for breaking into a locked unit at a Mount Vernon storage facility at about 3:30 a.m. on June 18. Trooper Arizona Favours, Ohio State Highway Patrol, caught Yoder immediately after he drove away from the storage facility with $900 worth of stolen property in his vehicle. After Yoder was arrested he made over a dozen telephone calls on a cell phone he found in a patrol car. Yoder was also convicted of unauthorized use of telecommunication property for using the cell phone without permission. Yoder was sentenced to a three-year term of community control supervision, including a 30-day jail sentence. Thatcher said Yoder will serve an 11-month prison term if he violates his supervision.
Christopher J. Matheson, 38, Howard, was convicted of grand theft for stealing over $5,000 worth of oilfield drilling equipment and miscellaneous supplies on Sept. 3, 2010. Thatcher said Matheson stole the property with a co-defendant. Matheson was sentenced to a three-year term of community control supervision, including a 30-day jail sentence. Thatcher said Yoder will serve a 17-month prison term if he violates his supervision. Deputy Tim Light, KCSO, investigated the case.
On June 4, 2010, Jesse J. Ervin, 19, Mount Vernon, was convicted of unlawful possession of a dangerous ordinance, a sawed-off, 20 gauge shotgun, and sentenced to a three-year term of community control supervision. Ervin admitted he violated the terms of his supervision in October by possessing stolen property, failing to follow the orders of his supervising officer and testing positive for opiates. Ervin was sentenced to a 180-day jail term, according to Thatcher.
