MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon City Council approved two measures Monday night that will help maintain jobs at two city businesses.

A measure that will support Mount Vernon Nazarene University’s efforts to issue Economic Revenue Development bonds to expand Prince Student Union was unanimously approved after a public hearing that offered no opposition.

According to Dr. Dan Martin, the 66,000 square feet that will be added will include a new basketball arena, workout and weight lifting facilities, classrooms, a multipurpose room and offices for coaches. The sports arena will seat 2,100; other activities will have a capacity of 3,000.

A tax abatement for Rolls-Royce was also approved unanimously. The abatement will cover the new office facility the company plans to build in the parking lot near the intersection of Sandusky and Chestnut streets.
